Should I eat before training?

It is not advised to train on an empty stomach especially if you want to improve strength, endurance and performance. Aim to eat a small meal or snack 2-4 hours before your workout otherwise your will be more likely to feel lethargic, unmotivated and faint. Sports drinks, gels or bars are ideal for consuming on the way to an event or as a light snack to fuel your hunger.

I have heard caffeine will dehydrate me prior to a workout is this true?

Caffeine acts on the central nervous system, increasing alertness and concentration. It also stimulates adrenaline release which is thought to raise fatty acid levels in the bloodstream. Caffeine is thought to cause mild diuretic effects when the body is at rest however research conducted by several US studies suggests that consuming caffeine prior training won't cause dehydration but may increase performance. How much should I aim to drink prior to an event or training session? (OR) how much CHO before a workout?

Is it possible to consume too much water?

Although it is more common for endurance athletes (exercisers) to suffer from dehydration, consuming too much water is also possible. Over hydrating yourself by continually drinking plain water can dilute the blood sugar levels causing a condition called hyponatremia, this is where the blood becomes so diluted sodium levels fall.If your event lasts for more than an hour aim to consume sports drinks containing electrolytes and carbohydrate to ensure sufficient hydration.
